Biography

She’s a sensation in Paris, an exciting new catch in New York and a much-loved talent at home in Sydney, Australia. She’s Melanie Horsnell, Australia’s ‘complicated sweetheart’, a writer and singer of tender, heartfelt, simply beautiful songs.
After some ten years of performing across Australia, Melanie has of late been basking in global adoration. Her debut album, The Adventures Of.. was a feature album on French national radio, after she learned and recorded a French language version of her beatlesque pop hit I Just Want Some Love
Melanie has since performed repeat tours across Europe – the last being a massive 20-show slog that won hearts from Amsterdam to Edinburgh.
And while tracks from her debut album have earnt her all kinds of accolades – glowing reviews, iTunes single of the week, a feature artist on Triple J’s Ausmusic month, and supports with Bernard Fanning, The Frames and The Panics among others, her best work is still to come.
Earlier this year, Melanie and band returned to the studio, this time with ARIA award winning producer Paul McKercher (Augie March, Magic Dirt, Little Birdy, Eskimo Joe) to record her next chapter, Complicated Sweetheart.
Complicated Sweetheart is Melanie Horsnell doing what she does best, bravely baring her tales of love lost and found, sung in sweet whispery melodies and plucked delicately on nylon strings.
Already, tracks previewed from the new album such as the up-tempo pop gem Mary Mary and bittersweet Breakup have seen Melanie invited to play the CMJ Music Marathon in New York and showcases in Los Angeles. At home, she was asked in April to discuss her new songs as a feature presenter at the inaugural APRA Sydney Songwriter Summit.
With her independent spirit, her shy charm, an endless supply of catchy melodies (and an even deeper bag of bad jokes!), Melanie Horsnell is undeniably one of Australia’s most unique musical artists.
Inflatable Girlfriend Records/MGM will release Complicated Sweetheart on September 6th 2008.

Previous Information:
In this fast-food world of manufactured music, Sydney songbird Melanie Horsnell is truly one of a kind.
She has built her musical craft over time, fine tuning and using life’s experiences in front of live audiences (always the best critics). She writes songs of real life and loves, and is building a loyal fan base on a one to one basis, in intimate venues throughout Australia, Europe and Great Britain.

Melanie first picked up a guitar at the tender age of five, learning classical and flamenco guitar. At just 10, she began busking at Manly beach where passers by were intrigued by the little flaxen haired doll with the oversized cowboy hat. By here late teens, she still hadn’t really thought of continuing her music career – she had her heart set on managing Woolworths – until she won a spot on The Northern Composure CD and national songwriting competitions. From there she headed to London for a year, and the songs really started to flow. Melanie spent the year busking on a daily basis and working on her songwriting skills.

Back home, Melanie began her residency at the Excelsior Hotel in Glebe in 2000 and became regarded as one driving forces behind Sydney’s blossoming “NuFolk” movement. Over the years at the Excelsior, Melanie performed with some remarkable artists including Paul Greene, Andy Clockwise, Bertie Blackman, Peregrine, Tim Ireland and Wesley Carr. Her residency continued for 4 years, but there were larger things afoot for the young songstress.

In 2001, Melanie independently released her first EP, Don’t Know What to Say, followed the next year her second EP Magic Mirror (produced by Garth Porter). A brilliant release, Magic Mirror was soon picked up by radio across the country and led to Melanie signing with Shock Publishing worldwide. Soon after, Melanie was approached to write songs for popular children’s show The Saddle Club and to score the soundtrack for the film Love in the First Degree.

Next Melanie began work on her debut album, again with Garth Porter behind the desk. The first single “Birds” earned Melanie high rotation on the Triple J network and saw her embark on countless adventures across the country. "Kiss You Again" has also recently been added to rotation.

A demo of her debut album The Adventures of... found its way into the hands of Bert Pijpers of Rounder Records in Europe and he was immediately taken with Melanie’s angelic voice and superb songwriting. Soon after, she signed to Rounder Records in Europe in 2004 and her debut album The Adventures Of... was released in The Netherlands, Germany and the UK .

Melanie even did a crash course in French to record the French version of the beatlesque pop gem “I Just Want Some Love” which helped The Adventures Of… wind up as feature album on national radio in France. Melanie has recently returned from her third tour of Europe, with each trip seeing her audience expand markedly. The most recent tour saw Melanie headlining her own shows in The Netherlands and Paris. Melanie also played to a packed house at The Esplanade in Singapore earlier this year.

Somehow crammed in between her European tours, Melanie has managed several Australian tours, including supports for The Frames, Bernard Fanning and Josh Pyke, She has also now set up her very own Independent label in Australia, Inflatable Girlfriend Records.
